Amla (Indian Gooseberry) Supplement and Benefits

Amla is the name for Indian Gooseberry that has a scientific name of Phyllanthus Emblica. It is basically a deciduous tree of the Euphorbiaceae family. It is an edible fruit and is known to have many benefits, ranging from health and medical benefits to beauty benefits as well. The Amla tree is small to medium sized and has a height of about 8 to 18 metre, with the branches being crooked and spreading out in all directions. Amla is light greenish yellow in color and has a smooth and hard surface. The berries usually ripen sometime in autumn and are handpicked. This herb tastes bitter and sour, and somewhat astringent like. It is highly fibrous in nature.

Different countries use this fibrous berry in different forms and it is also known by different names in all these countries. However, one of the most basic and famous use of Amla is in Chyavanprash, an Ayurvedic semi-solid supplement for the body that helps in improving the overall health. Amla is very rich in Vitamin C, and it is for this reason that it is highly recommended to pregnant and lactating women.

Amla is known to have antiviral and antimicrobial properties and helps in curing arthritis as well rheumatoid. Many herbal pills and tonics that focus on the reduction of these ailments have Amla as the main ingredient in them. In fact, experiments done with the leaves, bark and other parts of the tree have shown that the tree and the fruit are overall helpful in the reduction of inflammations as well, and can also help in the cure of cancer, some renal diseases and even diabetes.

There are laxative properties in Amla, because of which it is used in many medicines that are meant for constipation and other related problems. Hemorrhage, Diarrhea, and Dysentery can also be effectively dealt with the use of Amla in the meal or by consuming herbal capsules that have Amla in them. Ulcers and skin infections are of course easily dealt with because of the anti-bacterial properties.

Many shampoos have Amla as the main ingredient in them. This is because this herb is known to help bring a nice black shine to the hair and keep it healthy. In fact, when you consume Amla, then your skin too has a nice glow.

Amla has a direct connection with a person's body weight too. This is because the total protein level in the body increases and there is good nitrogen balance in the body. Apart from all these benefits, Amla provides many important minerals to the body which are essential for healthy growth and development of a person and to ensure that the person remains fit.

Gastritis is known to be cured by Indian Gooseberry very well, and for that matter all those people who suffer from any kind of stomach related problems, be it high acid secretion or anything else are advised to consume Amla and products that contain Amla as the main ingredient. FAQs on Amla (Emblica Officinalis, Indian Gooseberry)

What are antioxidants and how Emblica Officinalis or Amla help there?

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients that protect body cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. When the body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals that can cause damage. Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" and prevent and repair damage done by those free radicals. Heart disease, diabetes, macular degeneration, cancer etc are some of the major health problems contributed by oxidative damage. Examples of antioxidants include vitamins A, C, E, beta-carotene, lycopene, and other substances. Amla being a rich source of Vitamin C serves the purpose.

Why do I need to take Indian Gooseberry daily?

There are more than millions of microorganisms surrounding you all the time. You need a strong immunity to keep yourself away from all those deadly invisible structures. A weak immunity decreases all the resistive capabilities of your body towards those harmful microorganisms. Emblica Officinalis boosts your body's immunity continuously and keeps it alert of day-to-day infections. It not only saves your body from internal impurities but also works as a shield against all those microorganisms that surround us.

Can I still take amla supplement though I am not suffering from any health problem?

Yes definitely. Amla being a powerful antioxidant and rejuvenator boosts immunity and revitalizes your entire body. Indian Gooseberry will guard you against daily and seasonal infections. It is a well known gastro-intestinal toner so it helps in easy digestion. It also protects your heart from getting any problem. Being a rich source of Vitamin C, it is best healer and takes care of minor wounds without any threats. Amla is a daily health supplement that can help you in maintaining your body weight. It also helps in curing skin problems such as acne, eczema, skin allergies and minor rashes. Though you don't have any disease, Amla or Indian Gooseberry will help you 'not' to get any disease!

Amla is sour in taste, would it produce acidity?

No, in fact, amla is considered as one of the best natural medicines for acidity. One thing is to be clarified that this highly nutritious fruit is never just a sour tasted fruit. It contains five tastes (except salty taste) that are well balanced. Drink plain water after having gooseberry fruit, it is sweetened!
