Pregnancy Week 28

In pregnancy week 28, your little one will weigh about 2.2 pounds and is around 14.8" long. The smooth brain that had no furrows is maturing to form little tiny grooves that you see in a normal human brain. Some babies remain bald even for a few weeks after birth, whereas some babies will have hair that will become long. There are some babies who are born with a head full of hair. Sometimes this hair can fall out or change color after delivery. They now have eyebrows and beautiful eyelashes.

Pregnancy week 28 is the seventh month, and your baby is really growing fast. The eyes have completely formed and now their eyes are fully opened, as the eyelids are not fused shut anymore. Muscle tone is still improving a little bit at a time, and now your little one has around 3% body fat, and becoming plumper each day. If a baby is born now it has a 90% survival rate, and even though it can breathe air, the baby may find it difficult. Your little one can recognize your voice and also your partner's, so both of you must talk and read to your baby.

What does pregnancy week 28 do for you? Your fundus is about 3" above your navel. Your weight will increase a lot by pregnancy week 28, and all in all, you would have increased by about 24 pounds! You have been gaining a pound each week till this pregnancy week. But do not worry as this extra weight is necessary for your baby's protection and nourishment.

As your weight increases, so does your leg cramps, swelling, lower back pain, varicose veins, hemorrhoids and indigestion. You may experience some itching as your skin continues to stretch. As the baby's head is pressing on the pelvic area there'll be a lot of pressure, because the baby is literally sitting upside down on your bladder and rectum. A massage from a competent and pregnancy-experienced massage therapist may work wonders.

In pregnancy week 28, you will be seeing your doctor fortnightly, which will become weekly, once you are in your 36th week. During your visits your doctor will check on how well the baby is developing, and also for any early labor signs. The doctor will also do vaginal examinations to check-out the dilation of the cervix. Arm yourself with a list of questions, so that you can get the doctor to answer them and relieve you of any worry about your pregnancy. The doctor will increase the pre-natal appointments if the pregnant woman is diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes or placenta previa, which is when the placenta is found close to the cervix and sometimes even covering it.

If people are suggesting a baby shower, you can get one planned around about now. Your nursery may or may not be ready, as some couples will wait till after delivery to set one up. If you are planning a nursery, you can get help from family and friends. With the present condition of your tummy, there will be more than enough helpers.

It's a good idea to keep a journal of your experiences if you have not done so yet. You will soon forget all your experiences, and in addition it can also be useful for any later pregnancies.
